Religious views should influence government decisions0Introduction
Some governments around the world have a religious basis. For example, many Middle-Eastern governments are founded on the religious teachings of Islam. A majority of Western governments are highly influenced by Christian beliefs. A handful of Asian governments have been shaped by Confucian values. Does religion have a place in government? Today’s debate will be on whether religious views should influence government decisions. Let’s see what Henry and Ashley have to say about this topic.

Religious views should influence government decisions3Henry (Constructive)
Religious views should influence government decisions. People may believe in different gods and religious teachings around the world. However, many of the world’s main religions are based on similar core principles. Most religions dictate that followers must practice kindness, compassion, devotion, and non-violence. These are important and moral principles that should influence governmental decisions. Furthermore, religious citizens are more likely to respect laws if they are in line with their religious principles.

Religious views should not influence government decisions. There are multiple religions in a country. How would we choose which religion should influence a government’s decisions? It would be also unfair to choose one because then the other religions would not be represented in the laws of the country. Furthermore, there are some aspects of a religion that are explained by faith. However, governmental decisions should be based on logic. Religion and government should be separate.

Religious views should influence government decisions9Henry (Rebuttal)
It is impossible to separate religion and government. Religion is where people derive most of their values. It guides people on how they should live their lives. Therefore, it only makes sense to incorporate religion in our laws. Why should governmental decisions be based solely on logic? We need to consider religion when making laws because it is an important part of the lives of many citizens. Government decisions should be made to serve the people.

Religious views should influence government decisions12Ashley (Rebuttal)
I am an atheist. Therefore, I see no reason for involving religious views in government decisions. I want the government to make decisions that represent all the people in the country. France is a prime example of a secular state. France prohibits the involvement of religion in state affairs. The government also treats all religions equally by law. I believe that involving religion in the government will cause conflict between religious groups. It will also isolate some religious groups from their governments.

Religious views should influence government decisions15Judge’s Comments
The winner of today’s debate is Henry. Ashley said that she saw no reason for involving religious views in government decisions because she is an atheist. The problem is that Ashley’s personal religious views are not a valid reason why religion and government should be separate. She could have said that there is a population of atheists that would not be represented if religion was involved in government decisions. In a debate, it is important to use facts and evidence.
