Why Leaves Change Color in Autumn

During spring and summer, the leaves on the trees absorb sunlight. Scientists call this process photosynthesis. It gives the leaves their green color. However, when fall comes, the days are shorter and the leaves receive less sunlight. As a result, the green pigment slowly disappears. Instead, we see yellow, orange, and red colors that were hiding beneath the green pigment.
