Green Aroma

You may have noticed that the air smells different on rainy days. Scientists call the fresh fragrance “petrichor.” Raindrops hit the soil or plants. Then, they quickly trap scents from the surfaces of the soil or plants. The scents are from bacteria in the soil or from oil on the leaves of wet plants. Raindrops release the odors from nature into the air as they burst.

여러분은 비 오는 날 공기의 향이 다르다는 것을 알아챘을 지도 모릅니다. 과학자들은 그 신선한 향을 “petrichor”라고 부릅니다. 물방울들이 흙과 식물에 떨어집니다. 그리고는, 그 흙과 식물 표면의 향을 재빨리 가둡니다. 그 향은 흙 속에 사는 박테리아나 젖은 식물의 잎사귀에서 나오는 기름으로부터 나는 냄새입니다. 물방울들이 터지면서 그 자연의 향을 공기 중으로 발산시킵니다.
