Hoping for a More Peaceful World
An important step has been taken in the international community for peace. Iran and six countries - the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France, China, and Germany - reached a preliminary agreement for Iran to slow the development of its nuclear program. In turn, Iran is allowed to trade again with other countries.
Nuclear power is used to make electricity, but can also be used to make weapons. Iran has always said that its nuclear program is being used for peaceful purposes. Reaching the agreement took years of negotiating by all parties involved. Under the 100-page agreement, Iran must be open about its program as well as reduce certain supplies and equipment.
The countries that participated in the nuclear deal are the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council as well as Germany. The European Union also signed the deal.
During the process, Iran emphasized time and again that this does not mean that Western ideas, in particular those of the United States, are welcome in Iran. The Iranian government was overthrown in 1979 and the country has since been ruled by Muslim leaders, who shun values and pop culture, such as music and movies, considered to be “American.”
