There should be a worldwide ban on the use of driftnets
Introduction
Drift netting is one of the easiest and oldest fishing methods in
the world. Driftnets are large nets that float vertically in the
water. Any animal that passes through the driftnet gets caught in
the net. Many call for a worldwide ban on the use of driftnets because
of the environmental damage that they cause. Today our debaters
will discuss whether there should be a worldwide ban on this fishing
method.
Henry
(Constructive)
There should be a worldwide ban on the use of driftnets. Fishermen
try to catch fish with the driftnets. However, sea animals, such
as sharks, whales, dolphins, turtles, and seabirds, also often get
caught in the nets. Fishermen leave the driftnets in the water and
return after long periods of time to collect the fish. When they
return, they often find dead or hurt sea animals tangled in the
nets. Many of these species are now endangered due to driftnets.
Ashley
(Constructive)
There should not be a worldwide ban on the use of driftnets. A total
ban on driftnets would cost thousands of fishermen their jobs. It
would also damage the fishing industry because fishermen would not
be able to catch as many fish. There are many ways to make driftnets
safer for sea animals. Finally, cars are an important mode of transportation,
but they cause a lot of pollution. Why is no one calling for a ban
on cars?
Henry
(Rebuttal)
Fishermen must find different ways to fish and sustain the fishing
industry. Driftnets are too destructive to the environment and marine
life. Sometimes driftnets even get lost at sea due to strong currents
or accidents. Lost driftnets do not disintegrate in the water. They
float for years catching and killing any animal that gets caught
in their paths. Also, cars are much more necessary than driftnets.
Furthermore, automobile producers are actively working on ways to
make cars more environmentally friendly.
Ashley
(Rebuttal)
I do not deny that driftnets can be harmful to sea animals. However,
I think that this problem can be solved with tough regulations on
driftnets. For example, there should be harsh penalties for failing
to set free any sea animals caught in driftnets. This would motivate
fishermen to check their driftnets often to make sure no sea animals
are caught. A worldwide ban on driftnets is a big mistake. Drift
netting is one of the most effective fishing techniques.

The winner of today’s debate is Henry. Both debaters made some great
points. However, Ashley noted that there were many ways to make
driftnets safer for sea animals. This was a very important point
that required elaboration. Ashley should have explained different
ways that driftnets could be made safer. Remember, a powerful point
can fall flat if it is not explained properly. In a debate, recognize
your strongest points and make sure you explain them well in your
argument.
