Automation has a positive impact on society0Introduction
Automation is the use of machines to run processes with limited human intervention. As technology advances, we increasingly use automation to run different processes, such as the manufacturing of cars, steering of ships, or gathering of crops. Many jobs that were once done by hand are now done by machines. Today our debaters will discuss whether automation has a positive impact on our society. Let’s see what Henry and Ashley have to say about this topic.

Automation has a positive impact on society3Henry (Constructive)
Automation has a positive impact on society. First of all, it increases productivity. Machines never get tired! They can work longer hours than humans and create more products. Second, they can maintain a high level of product quality. Humans are prone to getting tired or lazy. This may decrease the level of quality of products. You can depend on machines to manufacture quality products. Finally, companies can save money because they do not have to pay as many employees.

Automation has a positive impact on society6Ashley (Constructive)
Automation has a negative impact on society. People are losing their jobs to machines. Machines do not have families to feed or mortgages to pay. They do not need the jobs in order to survive. However, companies are choosing to replace employees with machines in order to save money. Also, increased automation encourages our reliance on machines. For example, many people now rely on calculators in order to solve mathematical problems, instead of using their own knowledge and critical thinking.

Automation has a positive impact on society9Henry (Rebuttal)
Companies should replace employees with machines if they improve the quality of products and save money. Companies must do what is necessary to create the highest-quality products. Also, machines can do many dangerous jobs for humans. It is better to use machines to avoid putting employees at risk. Automation is increasing at an extremely fast rate. Furthermore, I believe that automation allows people more time to conduct complex and detailed tasks.

Automation has a positive impact on society12Ashley (Rebuttal)
People have become less intelligent because of their increased reliance on machines. They no longer think for themselves because they have computers, GPS systems, or calculators to help them! People used to use maps and memorize different routes. With the advent of the GPS system, drivers rely on this navigation device to reach their destination. When their GPS system breaks or is unavailable, drivers struggle to find their way. People now rely too much on machines.

Automation has a positive impact on society15Judge’s Comments
The winner of today’s debate is Henry. Although both debaters have great points, Ashley lost the debate because she only responded to one of Henry’s arguments in her rebuttal statement. Henry had many strong arguments. However, Ashley only addressed his point that humans are becoming too dependent on machines. Remember that your rebuttal is your chance to respond to your opponent’s points. If you do not challenge your opponents’ arguments, they become stronger.
